Reviewing Your Life Insurance Policy
Have you taken time to review your life insurance policy lately? This is so important to do because our lives are always changing, and the life insurance plans that we have had in the past can change when things in life change. Buying life insurance and then throwing it in a drawer and forgetting about it is not a good idea. The following are some big life-changing events that should spark you into reviewing your current policy. Keep in mind that life insurance protection is there for the ones you love, not just for your needs.
A New Home Purchase
You are now adding a very large asset into your life. This asset costs a lot of money and needs to be protected. What happens if you were to pass on? Would your partner be able to afford the mortgage? If you don’t have enough life insurance, they would likely have to. If you update your coverage to include this home, your spouse will be able to get some money in return to help with the payments. If you were to die, and they could not afford the home, then it could be foreclosed, or a sell could be forced upon them.
The Birth of a Child
This is a big one! You are now responsible for another life. This life needs to be protected with your life insurance just in case something goes wrong. Review your policy and see how it sets up with children. You might need to change your policy in order to reflect this birth. You could be underinsured if you have a new child and do not change your life insurance policy. You want them to have a great life; make sure that life can be great even in the event you are not around.
Marriage
When you are single you only have yourself to look after. Well, marriage combines two single people who now need to look out for each other. It is important to make sure that you are saving yourself some money, so check out both of your life insurance plans and see if you can combine them with the same insurance company. There is no need to spend more then you have to. You will have to change them up anyways to reflect the marriage, so see if you can save more money in the process. You want to start your new life together on the right track.
Divorce
Whenever divorce happens the two people will go back to their own life insurance policies. You do not want to be responsible for your ex-spouse, and they do not want to be responsible for you. Keeping them on your insurance will not be allowed in most cases and could just be a waste of money. This is why you need to contact your life insurance company and see how to handle a divorce with your policy. You will now have different assets because o the divorce, so make sure you are not covering something that does not belong to you anymore.
