Make Sure You Are Covered Before You Travel

Make Sure You Are Covered Before You Travel

When you think of travel, what do you think of? Do you think of sandy beaches, amusement parks, or hiking majestic mountains? How about exotic cultures, out of the way cafes, and a little local flair? Whatever you think of when you picture your ideal vacation, you probably don’t think about illness, strange doctors that don’t speak your language, and getting hit with outrageous medical bills. Although nobody wants to get sick while they are on vacation, the unfortunate fact is that many people do. Even more unfortunate is that most insurance companies will not cover you adequately if you have to see a doctor, go to the hospital, or be medically evacuated while you are away. Visitor health insurance can give you peace of mind that if you get sick while you are traveling, you won’t end up with medical bills that you can’t afford.

What is Covered

This type of policy covers many different aspects of your medical care while you are away. If you have to stay in the hospital or visit the doctor, you’ll be covered. If you are visiting a part of the world with inadequate medical care, and your illness or injury is so devastating that you have to be medivacked to another location, you will also be covered. While visitor health policies vary, many also include trip cancellation insurance. Although nobody wants to think about dying while on vacation, visitor health insurance often covers the return of your body and of your minor children, if something happens to you while you are away.

Why You Need It

If you are a millionaire, you might not need to worry about visitor coverage. The most expensive medical procedures, like chemotherapy or heart transplants, normally are not needed on vacation. If you’re not wealthy, you could end up financially wiped out if you become ill on vacation. In some cases, medical evacuation could cost $100,000 or more. Doctor and hospital bills can be costly as well. Medicare does not cover medical costs outside of the United States, and neither do most insurers. Even if your health insurance company covers hospital costs, it will undoubtedly be considered “out of network” and cost more, and will not cover medical evacuation.

Be Prepared

No matter where in the world you are traveling, it helps to be prepared before you go. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published information about preparing for illness or injury while abroad. They also publish a “Yellow Book” which extensively covers travel-related health topics, from scuba diving to cholera. Your health is important, and it is especially important to make provisions for your health when traveling abroad. That is why visitor’s coverage is so important.
